JoAnn was born and raised in Billings, Montana and graduated from Eastern Montana College with a
bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communication. As a non-traditional student, JoAnn was active in
student government and campus and department organizations. Her master’s degree in Rhetoric and
Communication was earned in 1988 from the University of Oregon in Eugene.
She is the mother of two grown children, Matthew and Rachel and is the doting grandmother of
one growing boy, Jacob. Her son earned a degree in Philosophy at ISU, earned a master’s degree in
Human Resources after serving in Afghanistan, and is beginning an MBA program. He is a retired Navy
officer, works in Oklahoma as a regional manager for an oil company. Her daughter earned a degree in
Psychology from Montana State University, Billings and completed several credits towards a master’s
degree at NAU. She is a leasing agent and fitness competitor and trainer, lives in Arizona with her
husband and son. Jacob is a genius and simply adorable.
JoAnn has worked at ISU for 20 years as coordinator and now director of the advising center. She earned
the National Academic Advising Award for Outstanding Advisor in 2001.
