Mathematics Courses

Students seeking placement into mathematics courses at Idaho State University are advised as follows: Students may register for MATH 111, MATH 117, MATH 140, or MATH 177 after passing MATH 51. Students may register for MATH 120, MATH 209, MATH 230, MATH 250, or MATH 252 after passing MATH 111 or MATH 117. Students may register for MATH 121 after passing MATH 117 or MATH 111 and MATH 112. Students wishing placement in courses past MATH 121 will be placed on an individual basis.

Students may also be place based on results from the Mathematics Placement Examination, the ACT Mathematics Exam, or the SAT Mathematics Exam. See the current course schedule for further information.

MATH 50 Developmental Mathematics 0 credits. (4 credit equivalent). Arithmetic of whole numbers, fractions, decimals; ratios and proportions; percents; signed numbers, and linear equations. For students who do not achieve a score on the Placement Examination sufficient to enter MATH 51. Graded S/U. F, S

MATH 51 Developmental Algebra 0 credits (4 credit equivalent). Linear equations, factoring, graphing, inequalities, functions, systems of equations, rational expressions, radicals, quadratic equations. MATH 111 Algebra 4 credits. Real and complex numbers, functions, equations, inequalities, polynomials, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations. MATH 112 Trigonometry 1 credit. Only for students with algebra equivalent to MATH 111 without trigonometry. Students desiring both algebra and trigonometry should take MATH 117.
