Courses

Technical General Education Elective

TGE 140 First Year Seminar 1 credit. This course provides an introduction to the nature of postsecondary education and a general orientation to the functions and resources at Idaho State University. This course is designed to help first-year and transfer students adjust to the University, develop a better understanding of the learning process, and acquire essential survival skills. The course utilizes presenters from various campus support systems, collaborative learning activities, and written assignments which involve student resources and activities on campus. The course also provides a support group of students in a critical transition year by examining problems common to first-year experience. It covers University resources, learning strategies, study techniques, test anxiety, time management, test preparation, and problem solving.

CHLD 100 Technical General Education (variable) 1-16 credits. The basic mathematical skills of fractions, decimals, percents, proportions are reviewed. Also, for technical fields, beginning algebra through the application of the quadratic equation is studied. An experiment-based science class that emphasizes development and application of equations and problem-solving techniques is taught. Communication skills, critical thinking and basic technical writing are stressed.

CHLD 105 Professionalism 3 credits. An introductory course including orientation to the Child Development program; stages of child development. Introduction to professional organizations, networks, community resources, and advocacy. Also including methods of observation and use of observations to plan curriculum. Includes classroom lectures, individualized instruction, and lab.

CHLD 110 Child Health, Safety and Environment 4 credits. This course covers information on safe and healthy environments for young children. Students receive information concerning positive health and safety practices in day care, preschool, and elementary school situations. Students will be taught how to assess and ensure safe indoor and outdoor areas. Includes mental health and personal safety. Includes classroom lectures, individualized instruction and practicum.

CHLD 113 Child Care and Education Practicum 1-20 credits. A field based learning lab in which the student, under supervision, trains in child care facilities in the local service area. Students will observe and participate in actual child care techniques and procedures within a care providing family. This practicum may be selected for students who would benefit from a directed practical experience.

CHLD 120 Early Childhood Social and Emotional Development 6 credits. Introduction to children's social development, social awareness, and concept of self. This course focuses on development of personal self-esteem in caregivers as well as children. Includes classroom lectures, independent instruction, and practicum.

CHLD 125 Guidance In Early Childhood Education 3 credits. This course provides students with information on positive guidance techniques. Learning include supporting social and emotional development by helping children to learn and practice appropriate and acceptable behaviors as individuals and as a group. Includes classroom lectures, individualized instruction, and practicum.

CHLD 130 Early Childhood Physical and Cognitive Development 6 credits. Introduction to children's physical and cognitive development. This course focuses on providing an environment supportive of children's acquisition of motor and cognitive competence through activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, development levels and learning styles of children. Includes classroom lectures, individualized instruction, and practicum.

CHLD 135 Fostering Creativity 3 credits. An introductory course which includes the value of play for children and methods to advance emotional, physical, and intellectual competence through opportunities that stimulate children to play with sound, rhythm, language materials, space and ideas in individual ways, and to express their creative abilities. Creativity in caregivers is also examined. Includes classroom lectures, individualized instruction, and practicum.

CHLD 140 Curriculum Implementation 4 credits. This course combines skills learned in previous courses into responsibility for planning and implementation in the classroom. This course focuses on applying theory into a practical setting. Includes classroom lectures, individual instruction, and practicum.

CHLD 150 Parent Involvement and Program Management 3 credits. This course introduces students to family education, program management, and professionalism in early childhood education. Topics studied in depth include: parenting styles and strategies, family communication, discipline, stress management, functional and dysfunctional families, family structures, team building, time management, job interviews, resumé development, professional image, and professional development. Includes classroom lectures and individualized instruction.

CHLD 160 Professionalism in Family Child Care 1 credit. An introductory course including orientation to the Child Development program; stages of child development. CHLD 210 Advanced Topics in Early Childhood Education 4 credits. This course will elaborate on "Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood" and research into other current topics in the profession. The course will also focus on individual needs and interests of the students related to these topics. Includes classroom instruction, research, individualized instruction, and practical implementation.

CHLD 220 Advanced Administration and Program Management in Early Childhood Education 4 credits. This course focuses on the development of budgets; curriculum development; staff recruitment; and retention; and a general look at program management that includes issues of insurance and applicable laws. Emphasis will be on the reality of being an owner or manager of an early care and education center or family child care. Includes classroom instruction, research, workshops, individualized instruction, and practicum.
