Economics

The study of economics is designed to help people learn about and understand the cause-and-effect relationships of economic decisions. For example, economic understanding helps in realizing the impact of government decisions to spend more money on the military, for this involves not only military strength, but the effect of such outlays on inflation, unemployment, taxes, and scarce resources. Economic knowledge will help one express opinions intelligently, will aid in evaluating campaign promises and it will do a great deal to explain why we have inflation, poverty, and unemployment, and what can be done about these problems.

The Department of Economics offers a number of degree options at the undergraduate level depending on a students interests and future goals. We provide an appropriate course of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree upon which the student can build a career by working for industry or government, or by being self-employed.

The department offers two different degree options including economic theory and applied economics. The economic theory option is focussed on how our countrys economic system functions. This degree is intended to provide the student with a general understanding of economic relationships as well as the ability to analyze the economic activities occurring and their effects, and to provide the student with an ability to forecast the future impact of economic activity on inflation, employment, and similar examples.

The applied economics option is designed to allow the student to pursue personal interests. For example, if the student has an interest in a business career, we offer a degree integrating economics and business. This option provides an understanding of economic relationships and the impact of economic actions on the business world. It also helps in predicting the future economic climate for business through analysis of todays economic policy. There are a variety of possibilities available for the integration of economics with other disciplines, such as medicine, political science and mathematics to mention just a few. A student desiring to obtain an applied economics degree should consult with an advisor in the Economics Department.

After Graduation

Careers for graduates with undergraduate degrees in economics vary widely. Job opportunities include positions involving forecasting sales, planning purchases and production operations, and analysis of business trends. In addition, banking, labor relations, public administration, business (financial planning and investment analysis), consulting, and foreign diplomacy are career alternatives for students with financial planning skills.

An undergraduate degree in economics also provides a solid background for graduate study in economics, law, and other fields requiring an understanding of economic systems.
