Challis, Idaho is a small rural town located in Central Idaho near the Salmon River. In the early 1970’s, the town had no existing medical facility. So in 1975, the Dupont and Steele Reese Foundations donated money for construction of the clinic building. It was operated through a variety of lease agreements until 1997, when the North Custer Hospital District took over operation of the facility. The clinic was renamed the Challis Area Health Center and began operating as a Medicare-designated Rural Health Clinic. For the past ten years, the NCHD has had a very successful contractual relationship with St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center for management of the clinic. Dr. Richard F. Paris of St. Luke’s Family Medicine in Hailey, Idaho has been the Medical Director of the CAHC since 1999 and oversees medical care provided by the clinic’s mid-level providers. In June of 2006, Ken Hyatt, PA-C, began working full-time at the CAHC after spending a year working at the Sa
lmon River Emergency Clinic in Stanley, Idaho. In June of 2007, Helen Winegarner, a nurse practitioner who’d previously worked as a locum provider at the clinic, joined the staff on a permanent basis. Currently, Hyatt and Winegarner share a 1.6 FTE position. Each provider works 3 ten hour days with one overlap day on Wednesdays. Winegarner recently decided to move from her current role to work on a part-time, fill-in basis for the clinic. The provider who takes this job will be filling her position.
The Challis Area Health Center operates Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and functions as a primary care clinic offering scheduled appointments. It also serves as an urgent care facility for the surrounding area, providing basic emergency services including interfaces with ground and air ambulance to transfer patients to regional hospitals as needed. CAHC providers do no emergency care outside of the clinic. Any emergencies before or after clinic hours are dispatched to the local volunteer ambulance service, which is also operated by the NCHD. The closest rural hospital is 60 miles away with tertiary hospitals approximately 2 ½ hours away by ground.
The Local Medical Community:
Dr. Paris comes to Challis two days per month to see patients at the CAHC and oversee the mid-level providers. In addition, he often brings medical students and residents from the Idaho Residency Program with him to the clinic so that they can experience healthcare in a rural setting. Dr. Brian Fortuin, an internist from Twin Falls, comes to the CAHC four times a year to see patients. The community is also fortunate to have as residents both a physical therapist and an occupational therapist that operate private practices. There is a local pharmacy located in one of the town’s two grocery stores. And there is a husband and wife team of chiropractors who operate a full-time clinic in town that also serves as the location for a part-time massage therapy practice.
