Unfortunately, there aren't any Hollywood movies about the
Oregon Trail that we can recommend. However, there are no shortage
of westerns we like. Here's a few.

A must-see classic
Little Big Man (1970)
Starring
Dustin Hoffman, this sweeping, critically-acclaimed film is a
portrait of a man who lived through all the key events in the
old west. The film makes a strong statement about our treatment
of Native Americans. Both funny and tragic, it's a real masterpiece.

Our all-time favorite
Dances with Wolves (1990)
This film provides a
strikingly accurate look at life in the west in the mid 1800s.
Amazing cinematography, great characters, and a whole new view
of Native Americans. The best western of the 90s.

a sanitized Hollywood version of the western journey; but it's
a lot of fun if you are a Reagan fan.
Butch
Cassidy & The Sundance Kid (1969)~

in this classic film that rejuvenated the American western. An
academy award winner for cinematography and a box-office smash.
Buffalo
Soldiers (1997) ~ VHS ~
Usually ships in 24 hours ~ Danny Glover stars in this movie

High adventure; and one of the few films to deal with the African-American
experience in the West.
Wagons
East (1994) ~ VHS ~ Usually
ships in 24 hours ~ Why would we include this John Candy/Richard
Lewis comedy? Certainly not because of the critical acclaim--there
wasn't any! But if you're a teacher, it might be a fun way to
end your Oregon Trail unit. Have the kids point out all the historical
goofs in this wagon train movie.
