aerobics began in Jan. 2003
The HHP have been providing community based health
promotion services in the American Falls and Aberdeen
areas since 2000.
Since then the HHP has identified that the predominant
health problems in these communities are type 2 diabetes,
heart disease and obesity.
To date, the project has revealed rates of obesity
as ~100% for over the age of 30 years.
Rates of type 2 diabetes are about twice the expected
rates for Hispanics over 40 years of age.
Chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease
have health risk factors that we are addressing in
the Salsa Aerobics Program.
Our Purpose is prevention and intervention with Aerobics.
We build programs that help reduce risk factors like:
-Lack of regular medical checkups (including pap
tests and mammograms)
-Lack of information about basic health care issues
(ex: lack of HIV/AIDS information, resources for domestic
violence and intervention health programs).
Physical activity provides many
benefits for the physical, mental and emotional body.
1. Increase ENERGY
2. Increase Flexibility
3. Increase range of motion
4. Increase strength
(muscle and bone density)
5. Increase endurance
6. Decrease stress
7. Decrease anxiety and - depression
8. Lowers LDLs and increase HDLs
(good fat)
9. Lowers risks for diseases
10. Builds confidence and self- esteem
11. Controls weight
12. Improves metabolism
13. Improves the immune system
14. Lowers your resting heart rate
15. Changes body mass
and body composition
16. Lowers blood pressure
17. Aids in losing weight.
Body composition and Body Mass Index is one part
of a persons overall physical fitness.
The others are cardiovascular endurance (fitness
of the heart and lungs),
Muscular strength and flexibility.
The first two parts are linked with the risk of heart
and blood vessel disease.
Obesity is a major, independent risk factor for heart
disease and type 2 diabetes.
